According to Benjamin Franklin “Nothing in this world is certain except Death & Taxes”.
But in the ever-changing world of Supply Chain Management, especially as we confront our new normal, what we do know is that operations pre COVID-19 will not be the same post COVID-19.
We also know for sure that today’s customer, today’s consumer is more informed, more connected, and more demanding than ever before. The rise of eCommerce has accelerated everything and changed the way consumers see the world.
This puts increased demand on logistics to always fulfil the promise of instant shipping. It makes sense then to plan an interim phase between old ways of working and new ways of working.
However, before you do this you must know where you are currently, where is your baseline, how are you performing today. It makes little or no sense to invest in Supply Chain technology and deliver on the promise of transparency and improved customer experience if your current operation is not performing to plan.
You need to understand your key drivers, Warehousing – Transportation – Demand – Distribution and your current workforce and the workplace to make it happen.
You will also need to understand and review your existing BCP (Business Continuity Plan), asking questions like:
- does it reflect your current operations?
- Is it relevant today?
- Is it accurate?
- Is it in good shape?
As Karen Levitt, the CMO of Locus Robotics said best.
“Those planning for the unexpected have suddenly found the unexpected descending on them unexpectedly”
A good way to understand your current operation is to have an independent half-day fresh eyes review that will give you the current operational picture and moreover highlight the things you need to do to get to What Good Looks Like.
